Isn't that Rich?: Northern Virginia Counties Top List of Richest in U.S.

Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington, Stafford, Prince William, and Alexandria are some of the wealthiest areas in nation by median household income

Where's the wealth of the United States?  Silicon Valley?  Manhattan?  Bill Gate's backyard in Medina County, Washington?

 

Northern Virginia suburbs of D.C.How about the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington D.C.! 

Forbes Magazine recently named the richest counties in the United States based on median income in the county

Northern Virginia had 6 counties place in the top 20, due in large part to the quantity and quality of high-paying jobs in the technology sector, government, government contracting, and legal fields.  High salaries and median income explain the boom in luxury priced property throughout the region.

 

FAIRFAX COUNTY

Ranked #1 in the country by median income pegged at $100,318.  Fairfax County has a population of over 1 million residents.  Fairfax County covers a large area and includes the following towns and municipalities:  Alexandria, Annandale, Burke, Centreville, Chantilly, Clifton, Fairfax, Fairfax Station, Falls Church, Great Falls, Herndon, Lorton, McLean, Oakton, Reston, Springfield, and Vienna. 

11% of available homes in Fairfax County are currently listed for over $1 Million.  In McLean & Great Falls, a whopping 67% of homes are priced at over $1 million, with an average price of $1.9 Million.

Dulles AirportLOUDOUN COUNTY

Just behind Fairfax County at #2 on Forbes list is Loudoun County with a median income of $99,371.  Loudoun County is further out from Washington, D.C., and its growth and income is driven by the presence of Dulles International Airport and a multitude of information technology companies that came to the area after AOL initially established its headquarters there.  Loudoun County includes the following areas: Ashburn, Dulles, Leesburg, Lovettsville, Potomac Falls, Purcellville, South Riding, and Sterling. 

About 200 homes in Loudoun County are currently on the market for over $1 Million.

The PentagonARLINGTON COUNTY

In the #9 position on the list with a median income of $87,350 is Arlington County, the closest-in suburb to Washington D.C.  Arlington lies just across the Potomac River from D.C. and is home to the Pentagon, the largest office building in the world.  Many Washington lawyers, lobbyists, and politicians call Arlington home.  Arlington County has no separate municipalities, but has several distinct areas, including: Rosslyn, Clarendon, Ballston, Crystal City, Shirlington.

STAFFORD COUNTY

Stafford County chimes in at #11 with a median income of $85,014.  Stafford County is situated about 45 miles south of Washington, D.C., halfway between the Nation's Capital and Richmond, the Capital of Virginia.  The major city in Stafford County is Fredericksburg, known for its rich history.  Quantico Marines Corps Base in the northern end of the County comprises over 30,000 acres. 

In the more affordable Stafford County, only 8 homes are currently priced at over $1 Million.   

 

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY

At #18 on the Forbes List, Prince William County boasts a median income of $80,783.  Prince William County includes the following areas:  Bristow, Dale City, Dumfries, Gainesville, Haymarket, Lake Ridge, Manassas, Woodbridge.

CITY OF ALEXANDRIA

Rounding out the list of Northern Virginia counties is Alexandria.  While technically it is an independent city, not a county, the statistics are tracked the same way.  At #19 on the list, Alexandria has a median income of $80,449.  Some of the popular areas of Alexandria include: Old Town Alexandria, Del Ray, Rosemont, Landmark, and Cameron Station.
